Osceola National Forest Volunteer Work Party 2024

Expired

Description

Come join the Florida Trail Association and the North Florida Trailblazers for a marathon maintenance event on the Osceola National Forest.  We will maintain all 20 miles of this section while camping along the shores of Ocean Pond.  With shared meals provided by the FTA and great friends around the campfire, come and lend a hand on a great project.

Camping: Our crew will camp at Ocean Pond in Osceola National Forest, a front-country campsite with showers & restrooms, water and electric.

Meals: All meals Thursday dinner - Monday lunch will be provided. Please by plan to arrive no earlier than 4pm on Thursday October 31st to set up camp and enjoy dinner with the crew. The workdays will be on Friday - Monday.

What to bring: For all projects you will need to bring a day pack, sturdy boots, and appropriate clothing. Long pants are required to do trail work and long-sleeved shirts are recommended. Sunscreen and bug spray are also advised. You will need to provide your own camping gear, this includes a tent, sleeping bag, lunch container (baggie or tupperware,) and personal items.

What to expect: The Osceola National Forest is a difficult section to maintain and the entire 20 miles must be maintained at least once a year.  The pine flatwoods and hardwood swamps needs to be cut back aggressively at the beginning of hiking season.  We will use a combination of power tools and hand tools to work the trail.

Directions: From Lake City head east on US 90.  The road to the campground is just past the blinking light in Olustee.  Turn left on 250A and then another left on FR 266.  There are signs at each turn leading you to the campground.
