Thursday Nov 17th is a special night for our Chapter; not only are we casting our ballots for the executive team positions, but we will also get to hear from one of our very own Big Cypress members, Carol Lindsey!
Seeking re-election is the incumbent Chair, Susan Manns, while the Vice-Chair and Treasurer positions are being sought by Ayla Shove and Vicky Siegel, respectively. All three positions are two-yr. terms.
Our nominating committee has confirmed that the period for identifying new candidates has passed so we will be asking that ONLY members in good standing vote for the above three (3) candidates at the end of the evening. The election will be conducted by a poll with a majority vote deciding the outcome. Please plan to stay until then.
Our esteemed speaker, Carol Lindsey, has been a member of the Big Cypress Chapter for over five years. She was a Family Nurse Practitioner and as such comes with a unique perspective on her topic,
‘ Climate Change and its Unseen Effects on our Health.’
It is one that should excite our curiosity since we are almost always outdoors, almost always in the Florida sunshine and almost always have the words ‘dehydration and safety’ on our lips. Carol will focus on heat illness - causes, some signs, and symptoms, and first aid. She also plans to briefly mention the increase in vector-borne illnesses (ticks specifically), allergens, and air pollution and will be tailored to being on the trail hiking and camping.
As a Steering Committee member and Co-Advocacy Chair of the Florida Clinicians for Climate Action, Carol advocates for policies promoting climate, health, and equity. She's also an active member of the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments, The CLEO Institute, and the Climate Reality Project, all organizations involved in educating nurses and/or the public regarding the effects of climate change. Her career includes over forty-years of nursing and public health experience in which she was dedicated to improving the health of underserved and vulnerable populations. Carol also served 30 years as an Active Duty Commissioned Officer in the United States Public Health Service. She is now retired and educating others on climate change and its impact on health, a subject she is very passionate about.
