HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023!!
We are ringing in the year with a few noteworthy walks as well as our 38th Annual South Regional Conference!
Back by popular demand and thanks to our immediate past-Treasurer Debbie Levi who has kindly offered to come back to town just to conduct these tours, her two Miami River Walks are on the calendar. Join us for Part 1 this Saturday, Jan 7th and next month on Sat February 4th for Part 2!
This first part of a walk through the history of the Miami River is a 10-mile easy/moderate hike that will take about 8 hours.
We’ll meet at 7:00 am at the Miami Circle (https://www.trailoffloridasindianheritage.org/miami-circle).
Hike will begin at 7:30 am. There is no bathroom at the Circle, so be sure to stop before you arrive. Public paid parking is available in garage or on the street, or you can take Metrorail then the Metro-mover and get off at the 5th Street Metro-mover Station and walk east. We will have two bathroom breaks; one at the Publix at SW 8th Street and 3rd Avenue, and the other at Winn-Dixie at NW 12th Street and 12th Avenue.
You may want to bring water and a snack(s) for the duration of the hike, although Publix and Winn-Dixie may help ease your needs. Wear comfortable shoes, a hat and don’t forget bug spray and sunscreen! Walking sticks/batons are optional.
We will hike to NW 12th Avenue, where the second bathroom break will happen. From there we will take a side trip to see the Alamo and Hallissee Hall on the Jackson Hospital campus. You never know who we will encounter on the hike; serendipitous meetings with local native Miamians are known to occur!
On our way back we will stop at Garcia's for lunch before finishing at the Circle. If you wish to bring lunches and eat at Lummus Park across the streer, that is an alternative to Garcia's.
Near the end we will take a side trip to the other Miami circle that is within the area of Metropolitan (Met) Miami.
