FTA Big Cypress is taking a walk into Miami’s past.
For those who grew up in South Florida you will remember visiting the Orchid Jungle in the Redland part of Homestead. After being ravaged by Hurricane Andrew, the old Orchid Jungle fell into disrepair and is slowly being reclaimed by Mother Nature. Now referred to as the Hattie Bauer Hammock Preserve, it can only be visited on a tour offered by the Miami Dade County Parks.
Our specially arranged tour will also cover the history of the local area as well as that of the Preserve and for sure, the old Orchid Jungle does have quite a history. It was a roadside tourist attraction operated by the Fennel family for over 70 years and now comprises 15 acres of beautiful tropical hardwood hammock through which runs a primitive trail. We are sure to see the original “Orchid Jungle” buildings which are still standing!
