It’s our last meeting of the 2022-2023 season and things are winding down as the temperature increases. We will be offering the occasional water-related activity until the new season begins in Sept and we hope you’ll stay tuned and join us....
Our May 9th program wraps up a wonderful season of speakers – we were taught how to recognize both heat exhaustion and heat stroke, and we took a deep dive into the flora and fauna of our beautiful Big Cypress National Preserve as we learned about the periphyton (that amazing building block of life); the dragon fly – nature’s ultimate predator; our busy 8-legged, multi-eyed neighbors the spiders; the thousands of migratory birds which make Florida a pitstop; the turtles and tortoises (who knew there were that many….and why our beach cleanups are incredibly important), and now finally we revisit the earliest natives of South Florida and what their ruins could teach us.
The topic is ‘Who Made The Everglades’ and it’s being presented by Malachi Fenn, M.A., RPA, of the FAU Florida Public Archaeology Network. Before becoming Public Archaeology Coordinator for FPAN’s Southeast Region, Malachi Fenn worked on cultural resource management (CRM) and museum projects throughout South Florida. They earned their B.A. in Anthropology from New College of Florida. A lifelong visual artist, Malachi has provided archaeological illustrations for numerous publications. Their specializations include Pre-Hispanic Maya archaeology and epigraphy, Florida pre-colonial and historical archaeology, museum collections care, and scientific illustration.
