Description

We are headed on another kind of trail and this time we are leaping onto a trolley!!

Come with us as we motor around the historic City of Coral Gables in the company of its first Historic Preservation Director, long since retired Lt. Col. Ellen J. Uguccioni.

Hear how regulations put into place during her time there, like the Cottage and Mediterranean Ordinances, helped preserve and is still shaping the place known as ‘The City Beautiful’, how she guided individual homes through the preservation process, created historic districts and even helped save that grand-dame of them all, the irreplaceable and immediately distinguishable Biltmore Hotel. Learn what makes a building/street/district ‘historic’ and what it takes to get on the National Register of Historic Places!

About our distinguished lecturer: Ellen earned her B.A. and M.A. in Art History at the Universities of Hartford and Missouri respectively before coming to work with the City of Coral Gables for 15 yrs (1985-1999). She went on to become Historic Preservation Planner with Janus Research and the Cities of Delray Beach and Miami, and as HP Advisor to the City of Sunny Isles. She even found time to be a lecturer at the University of Miami from 1990-1999 and 2010-2016.

Ms. Uguccioni is the author of several books including the Fountains of Kansas (1986), Coral Gables in Postcards (1988), Mediterranean Architectural Style Guide (1987), The Biltmore Hotel: the Legacy Endures (2002), Coral Gables: Miami Riviera with Aristides Millas (fellow historian, UM professor and good friend) and First Families in Residence: Life at the Florida Governor’s Mansion (2006).

Ms. Uguccioni has recently been given a Key to the City of Coral Gables and has been recognized by the current Mayor, Vice Mayor, and Commissioners for her immense contributions to the City of Coral Gables.
